Soldier's Heart Part 1

Every Soldier is Haunted.

For Army medic Kate McEvoy, her last mission in Afghanistan will be a mixed bag. On the one hand, there’s still so much to do. On the other, she and Jack Campbell, who’s also her CO, can finally be together. Except things don’t go according to plan and when Kate wakes up, she’s got nothing left—

Until the day a colonel from a top-secret DARPA project offers her a new mission she’d be batshit crazy to refuse.

Some Wounds Can’t Be Seen.

Sarah Grant had a fairy tale life: wealth, beauty, smarts. Then, two years ago, Pete Cooper, an Army dog handler and her lover, was killed in action. Desperate to hang onto Pete, Sarah adopts his military working dog, Soldier. Plagued by PTSD, though, Soldier’s a wreck. Then, again, so is she—

Unless she can allow Pete’s brother, Hank, to heal her damaged heart.

And Not Every Wound Heals.

Haunted by memories of Afghanistan, Army MP Gabriel Dane risks everything on a treacherous trek through the Black Wolf Wilderness. Maybe he makes it out, maybe not. He doesn't much care. But then he meets a mysterious woman named Mac, who’s insanely strong, a little spooky—

And much more than she seems.

Soldier's Heart Part 2

Everyone Has A Secret.

Gabriel Dane has disappeared. Worried, Kate McEvoy sets off in the middle of a freakish snowstorm to track him down. She’s also curious about what she can do now. The biobots in her brain are changing Kate in ways her DARPA masters never intended and don’t suspect.

And if they catch on to what she’s becoming, they’ll never let her go.

And Two Can Keep A Secret...

There’s distant gunfire in the Black Wolf, but there’s also nothing Sarah Grant or Hank Cooper can do. Instead, they’ll wait out the storm, and who knows? Because Sarah wonders if maybe it’s time she let Pete go—

Until the moment Sarah happens on photographs she’s never seen and realizes what she believed about Pete is a lie Hank’s been happy to keep.

If One Is Dead.

Kate is a lone wolf but never alone. Jack Campbell lives in her mind and at the tail of her eye. Created by her enhanced brain, Jack is the ghost in her machine: a phantom whose power only grows…

And one which may have plans of its own.

Every Soldier is Haunted…

Crackerjack Army medic Kate McEvoy volunteers for Bravo Company’s final mission to a remote village in Afghanistan. All soldiers know last missions are jinxed, but despite Captain Jack Campbell—her CO and would-be lover—asking her to stay behind, Kate is intent upon putting Afghanistan in her rear view. For Kate, going home—finally being with Jack—is all that matters.

Except for one shot…and then everything changes. When Kate wakes up, there is no Jack. No happily ever after. Her body is shattered, in pieces. She’s got nothing much left, and even less to live for—until the day a colonel from a top-secret DARPA project offers a new mission she’d be batshit crazy to refuse.

Some Wounds Can’t Be Seen…

Veterinarian Sarah Grant had it all—a fairy tale life of wealth, beauty, and smarts—until two years ago when Peter Cooper, an Army dog handler and the love of her life, was killed in action in Afghanistan. Desperate to hang onto Pete, Sarah adopts his military working dog, Soldier. Plagued by PTSD, though, Soldier’s a wreck—and without Pete, so is she.

Looking for a place the severely damaged dog can heal, Sarah moves into a decommissioned fire lookout tower near Montana’s Black Wolf Wilderness and works at training Soldier in search and rescue. What she can’t admit to herself is she’s also searching—for a new life, new purpose—and that Deputy Sheriff Hank Cooper just might help rescue her damaged heart.

And Not Every Wound Heals…

Former Army MP Gabriel Dane has lost his way. Haunted by the team he left behind in Afghanistan, now broke and out of options, he risks everything on a treacherous trek through the Black Wolf to Dead Man, a remote peak that lives up to its name. Maybe he’ll make it out, maybe he won’t. He doesn't much care.

Finally exhausted, out of supplies, and on his last legs, he meets a mysterious woman named Mac. Also ex-Army, Mac’s insanely strong, a little spooky—

And much more than she seems.

You Only Live Once . . .

Jack Campbell, Kate McEvoy’s would-be lover and her captain, is dead, and that’s her fault.
Cham Bacha was a disaster she can’t shake, and the blood’s on her hands.
The military rebuilt her for its own purposes, and her masters have plans.
But they’ve got another thing coming.
Kate’s off-leash and determined not to fail again. While in the Black Wolf, she and Gabriel Dane, a former MP she’s befriended, have shadowed a group of young Asian girls being force-marched through the mountains. Whether the girls are drug mules or destined for the sex trade, Kate can’t chance they or their guards will reach Dead Man Mountain, a treacherous region few visit and from which even fewer return. So, she hatches a plan: Gabriel will make his way to Lonesome and alert the authorities while Kate, posing as a lost hiker, joins the group.
What she doesn’t count on is Jack, the ghost in her machine, having ideas of his own.
Because Jack has already died once, and once is plenty.
But, Sometimes, That Life Is A Lie . . .

Meanwhile, at the fire tower on Chaney Peak, Sarah Grant works feverishly to clear a landing zone for the rescue chopper she hopes will arrive to whisk away the wounded girl she and Deputy Hank Cooper found earlier in the day. The task also keeps her from thinking too much about the photograph she discovered in Hank’s wallet: one which gives the lie to her past with Pete, Hank’s younger brother and her dead lover.
As the weather worsens and snow begins in earnest, she’s resigned to spending the night on her own. Then, out of the darkness and snow, a solitary search and rescue team member appears. Hank’s succeeded in getting word to Lonesome and while no other teams can be dispatched because of the weather, Mark Mitchell’s volunteered to come on his own.
Sarah’s elated. It doesn’t hurt that Mark is not only competent but charming and easy on the eyes. Better yet, the attraction seems mutual. Being stuck here suddenly isn’t such a terrible prospect. After all, doesn’t she need to move on, let go of the past? She’s almost giddy . . .
Until the moment she realizes Mark may not be what he seems.
And Now, Time Is Not Your Side . . .

Hurt and puzzled by Sarah’s sudden coolness, Hank Cooper’s set out for Lonesome. He’s disgusted, angry at himself. He’s become like Dobbins from Vanity Fair, waiting and hoping Sarah will see him as a whole person, one who would care for and cherish her. Sarah is just as stubborn, though, preferring to cling to a dead man—and, really, who can compete with that?
He decides job one is to get to Lonesome and send help. He’s still got plenty of time and enough daylight to spare. Once the girl’s safe, he and Sarah will find space and time to talk.
Except Hank makes a mistake.
And now, his time is running out.

Everyone Has A Secret . . .

When gunfire jolts former Army medic Kate McEvoy from a nightmare of her last, disastrous mission in Afghanistan, she discovers Gabriel Dane, an Army MP she befriended in the Black Wolf Wilderness, has disappeared. Gabriel is AWOL, depressed, and out of options. Fearing the worst, Kate sets off in the middle of a freakish, early-season snowstorm to find him—even if this means bringing out Gabriel’s corpse.

She’s also curious about just how far she can push herself. A test subject for a top-secret DARPA program, Kate is a prototype, with a rebuilt body and a brain crammed full of nanocircuits and biobots busily rewriting her neural pathways. Kate knows she’s changing in ways her DARPA masters never intended and don’t suspect.

And if they catch on to what she’s becoming, they’ll never let her go.

And Two Can Keep A Secret . . .

There’s gunfire somewhere in the Black Wolf. For the time being, there’s nothing Dr. Sarah Grant or Deputy Hank Cooper can do. Along with Sarah’s dogs, Soldier—a traumatized ex-MWD, who once belonged to Sarah’s dead lover—and Daisy, they’ll wait out the storm in the Chaney Peak fire station.

Not a terrible prospect. Sarah never has thought of Hank, who’s also Pete’s older brother, as anything other than a true friend. Except she now wonders if Hank might not want more. Or is it that she does? Because maybe Hank is right. Like Soldier, Sarah’s obsessed with the past, always looking over her shoulder, using Pete’s ghost as a shield. Maybe time for her to let all that go, and she thinks she’ll do just that . . .

Until the moment Sarah happens on photographs she’s never seen—and realizes everything she always believed about Pete is a lie Hank’s been happy to keep.

If One Is Dead . . .

Kate is a lone wolf, but she’s never alone. Jack Campbell—or what passes for the man she loved—lives in her mind and at the tail of her eye. She hears him. At times, Jack is so there she feels him. Tastes him. Wants him. Created by her enhanced brain, Jack is the ghost in her machine: a phantom whose power only grows . . .

And one which may have plans of its own.
